News / Multimillion pound Whalsay waterworks reach ‘milestone’

WHALSAY’s new £5.4m water treatment plant is one step closer to completion after a major part of its structure was shipped to the island last week.

The metalwork, assembled in Ross-shire, arrived in Symbister on a barge from Inverness.

The new Scottish Water treatment plant is on course to be completed by spring next year.

As part of the redevelopment, a new pumping station will be built next to the existing one near Loch Huxter.

David Kitching, senior project manager with Scottish Water, said the delivery of the plant structure was a “major milestone”.

“Off-site fabrication and testing with modular delivery has realised the significant reduction in on-site construction and traffic movement, normally associated with a project of this nature,” he added.

“The project is also using other modular build techniques, with a benefit of reducing site construction time further.”

Earlier this month Scottish Water confirmed plans for a £4 million maintenance programme throughout Shetland that will take place over the next few years.
