An unsuccessful smear

Jonathan Wills is right to say that Mr Carmichael’s ploy is not a unique example of the smearer’s art (The honourable solution; SN 22/5/15).

It was not even a successful one.

For a good example of how it should be done read Chris Mullins’ brilliant novel A Very British Coup (1982).
