Letters / Far too gentle
I am not a member of Sustainable Shetland, as they are far too gentle and non confrontational for my taste. Sometimes a gentle approach is not enough.
That said, let’s look at Mr Bunyan’s letter (A hollow victory; SN 13/8/14). Apart from the opening about SuS being against any commercial renewable energy scheme in the islands, Mr Bunyan spouts a litany of greed.
I quote: “…tens of millions of pounds into the islands”. He follows with “…new jobs and a more secure future for the islands.”
Has Mr Bunyan not noticed our future is already very secure, and we are unable to fill the jobs available at this time?
Green energy will require technical expertise; Shetland has an educational system geared to the creative arts. We are manifestly unable even to fill the advertised jobs for the oil industry.
VE and green energy will just import more contractors and a transient workforce. Do we really need that? We lack the health service and infrastructure for those already here.
Now let’s look at the downside, simply Bunyan et al have no problem whatsoever blighting the health and lives of their fellow Shetlanders, destroying our local environment and industrialising Shetland and its seas.
I believe no more need be said, especially as “The News” would not print my true feeling about such people.
