News / Scam alert

SHETLAND businesses are being warned to watch out for scam calls from fake technicians enquiring about in store credit/debit cards payment units after one local company lost money over the weekend.

The caller claims to represent the unit’s manufacturer and requests a sum of money is processed through the unit as part of its maintenance procedure.

The scam allows the bogus caller to claim the amount that has been processed, losing the business money.

Shetland area commander Angus MacInnes said that one local company had fallen victim to the scam over the weekend and he warned others to watch out.

Last week the police were warning about tradesmen calling door to door offering to do painting work that was below standard, and tool salesmen have also been offering what have been deemed to be shoddy goods to unsuspecting households.

Anyone with concerns is asked to contact the police on 101.
