News / Hefty fine for drug driving

A SHETLAND man who was arrested after police found him stumbling around trying to change the wheel of his car was fined £1,000 and disqualified from driving for 18 months at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Wednesday.

Anthony Leigh Allport, of 3 Ladies Drive, Lerwick, admitted driving while under the influence of drugs on an unclassified road near his home on 31 May. Witnesses had seen him driving erratically and twice mount the kerb before stopping at Grantfield Garage.

The court heard that Allport had suffered a relapse after going into rehab, but now had a job and was willing to undergo testing for drugs.

The thirty nine year old also admitted possessing heroin and diazepam at his home on 11 December last year, a charge on which sentence was deferred for three months during which he will be tested once a week for drugs.
