News / Woman embezzled £18,000

SENTENCE on a young woman who defrauded a former partner of more than £18,000 has been deferred for the preparation of a social work report.

Appearing at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Wednesday morning, Charlotte Smith, of Goodlad Crescent, in Lerwick, pleaded guilty to using a PayPal account without authority to do so.

Over a period of two months, the 25-year-old transferred funds into her personal PayPal account and made payments for goods she obtained by fraud.

Smith operated the fraudulent scheme from an address in Whalsay and elsewhere between 31 May and 26 July this year.

The court heard on Wednesday that the bank had recompensed the victim of the fraud and that Smith had already made a significant repayment of around £11,000.

Smith is due back in court for sentencing on 26 September.
