News / Man threatened violence towards woman holding baby
A MAN from Lerwick who threatened his ex girlfriend with violence while she was holding a young baby has been placed under supervision for one year.
Mark Curran, of Lovers Loan, previously admitted shouting and swearing at the woman at an address in Sandwick on 1 October, repeatedly punching a couch and damaging walls by headbutting them.
He also banged on walls and doors, damaged the woman’s phone by throwing it to the ground and kicked a door open close to her.
Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said the 25 year old “forced an argument” with the woman in a “drink-fuelled” incident. He said she was holding a young baby throughout the incident.
The woman called Curran’s employer for assistance before he locked himself in the bathroom and caused more damage.
Defence agent Tommy Allan said his client had experienced a number of “personal tragedies” and was struggling to cope at the time.
He has not drunk alcohol since the offence and both parties are working towards reconciliation, Allan added.
In addition to the supervision, Sheriff Philip Mann fined Curran £200.
Laurence Moar from Virkie was also placed under supervision for one year for assaulting his wife at his home address earlier this year.
The 35 year old, of Northtown, Exnaboe, previously admitted seizing hold of the woman by the neck, pinning her down on a bed and repeatedly punching her on the head to her injury on 23 April.
Defence agent Tommy Allan said his client has taken on board the “full significance of what he has done”, adding that the couple are on good terms.
Stealing a total of 44 bottles of alcopops from the Tesco supermarket in Lerwick has landed a man with a £200 fine.
Trevor Couper, of the town’s Cairnfield Road, took the bottles on two separate occasions on 21 August last year.

He was also fined £325 at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Wednesday for uttering threats of violence towards two men at Lerwick’s St Magnus Street on the same day, challenging them to a fight, brandishing a bottle at them and shouting and swearing.
All of the offences were committed while the 23 year old was on bail.
