News / Blend of sculpture and dance

A NEW exhibition that blends sculpture and dance is to open at the Bonhoga Gallery this weekend.

Bone and Shadow: A Mythology of Place is a collaboration between Unst-based artist Tony Humbleyard and Edinburgh choreographer Jack Webb.

Humbleyard, who runs a studio at the Shore Station in Unst, is inspired by items such as animal bones and other objects found in the wilderness.

The fine art graduate has worked with dancer Webb on his new exhibition to give it a unique edge.

The associate artist at Glasgow’s Tramway has been working in Unst alongside Humbleyard to create a bespoke piece to accompany the sculptor’s work.

The display opens at 6pm on Friday 22 April at the Weisdale gallery with a premiere performance by Webb.

The dance routine will be filmed and used as part of the exhibition, which will run from 23 April to 5 June.

Shetland Arts exhibition manager Jane Matthews commented: “This exhibition is an incredible blending of two artists who, while working in very different media, have a similar approach to collecting objects and information to build something new.

“This is the first time that Tony and Jack have worked together, and it is really inspiring to see how Jack has been able to marry his body and practise to Tony’s three dimensional work to create something new and very exciting.”
