News / Remanded over drug charges

A FORTY seven year old man has been kept behind bars after appearing at Lerwick Sheriff Court on two drugs charges.

Allan MacLean, of Scalloway, appeared in private from custody on Tuesday afternoon.

He made no plea or declaration, was committed for further examination and remanded in custody. He is expected to reappear in court next week.

Meanwhile, police say they have recovered drugs with a value in the region of £28,000 from an address in Scalloway.

Inspector Paul Daley said he hoped Monday’s seizure “demonstrates Police Scotland’s commitment to disrupting the supply of controlled drugs within our communities – it remains one of our top policing priorities in Shetland and the wider Highlands and Islands.”

He continued: “This is a substantial quantity of drugs to seize and we hope in doing [so] steps have been taken to prevent potentially vulnerable members of the community coming to harm.

“In an effort to reduce the harm caused by drug abuse, officers continue to work closely with local communities and our partner agencies.

“Criminals do not adhere to borders and neither will Police Scotland. Officers from across the Highlands and Islands division will continue to be proactive in reducing the supply of drugs to the Shetland Isles and the north.”

The inspector added: “Intelligence is the lifeblood of a successful investigation and the service relies on and is grateful for the support of local communities in supplying this valuable information.”

Anyone with concerns regarding the abuse of controlled drugs is urged to contact Police Scotland on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
