Community / MS Society says ‘thank you’ to local community after successful fundraising drive

The MS Society Shetland had a celebration buffet earlier this year to mark the 60th anniversary of the charity in the isles.

SHETLAND MS Society has thanked the public for its help and support during this year’s fundraising campaign to mark its 60th anniversary as a local charity.

Well over £15,000 has been raised towards the charity’s annual running cost of around £26,000.

Over £10,500 was raised through the MS Society’s diamond jubilee raffle, with many local organisations donating prizes, including £5,000 coming from Sullom Voe Terminal operator EnQuest to be used to buy raffle prizes.

Amy and Wayne Uren raised £4,355 in a sponsored parachute jump.

Kathleen Kettles completed a 167 staged mile sponsored cycle to raise £620 which was split between MS Society Scotland and Shetland.

Jacqueline Tulloch was forced to cancel her running marathon due to injury, but still managed to raise £334.

Meanwhile Michael Grant raised £400 through a golf raffle.

All funds raised go towards the MS Society’s support services for MS sufferers such a neuro physiotherapy, talking therapy, chiropractic services, various types of massage, as well as a taxi service for wellbeing appointments.

A cowl in the MS Society pattern

Meanwhile, local textile artist Helen Robertson has designed a cowl based on the MS Society triangle pattern. These are available as patterns, kits and finished cowls.

A spokesperson for the MS Society said they were grateful to Jamieson’s of Shetland for donating £200 of yarn and to all the volunteer knitters who are generously giving their time.

The completed cowls, kits or pattern can be ordered here

In addition, MS Society Shetland is also selling a “wipe clean A4 double sided” soup sheet with 17 tried and tested recipes for a quick and easy tasty soup. These are available for a fiver here

The spokesperson said: “The biggest thanks is to the community of Shetland for all their help and support over the past 60 years.”
