Letters / Better use of active travel funds
While it is good to hear that the Shetland Recreational Trust has received funds
to invest in electric bicycles in Unst, using this money for ‘charging
points’ is probably not the best use.
Active travel schemes benefit from healthy islands funding as local projects secure £130k
Bicycle batteries take many hours to recharge and usually powers the bicycle for 30-40 miles.
Unst is a small island, and it is highly unlikely that a cyclist will need to recharge en route.
Better to use the funds for cycle racks on buses so we can more easily bring our
bicycles to Lerwick for a shopping day.
