Letters / Productive conference
I would like to put on record my thanks to Orkney Islands Council for their hospitality and professionalism in hosting the ‘Our Islands Our Future’ conference.
As someone who is not directly involved in the project board for the initiative I would also like to thank all the officers and members of Shetland Islands Council, Orkney Islands Council and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar for their work in taking the campaign forward.
In particular I would commend the council leaders, Gary Robinson, Steven Heddle and Angus Campbell, who developed this initiative.
The presentations at the conference were, without exception, thought provoking and though many were challenging, it was good to see that all were supportive of the campaign.
In particular, I thought the presentations from island groups from across Europe who have a level of autonomy that we aspire to, provided much food for thought.
Never before have the islands’ authorities collaborated in such a productive manner as in ‘Our Islands Our Future’.
By the three leaders of Shetland, Orkney and the Western Isles, our fellow members and our respective communities continuing to engage and work together with the UK and Scottish governments this initiative can bring real benefits to the people of Scotland’s islands.
