Council / West councillor to step down
ANOTHER by-election looms after a Shetland West councillor decided to step down from his role due to changes in the work pattern of his other job.
John Leask was elected in the west ward in May alongside Liz Peterson.
But he has now written to the council’s legal chief to confirm his intention to step down, effective from 29 August.
Leask said a major change in the work pattern in his other job will not allow him sufficient time to carry out his duties effectively.
He said it had been a pleasure working with councillors and SIC staff.
Leask added: “I would like to thank the electorate of Shetland West for their confidence in me, and to everybody who has given me advice and support during my time on the SIC.”
While the west ward only elected two members, seven people put themselves forward.
Earlier this month a by-election was held in the North Isles ward to fill a seat left vacant after the May elections.
