SHETLAND Islands Council is urging inter-island ferry users to sign up to a new text messaging and e-mail service to keep up to date with the latest travel news.
Ferry service resource manager Colin Manson said on Tuesday that the recent disruptions on Yell Sound had already proven the benefit of the new set up.
The subscription only service was quietly launched last month and the council is now keen to see more people signing up to it.
People can join either an SMS or email service by going to the SIC’s website at

Mr Manson said that people can choose the ferry service they want to receive news about.
So far around 200 people, including the department’s staff, have signed up.
“The service allows me to send real time information to the travelling public to keep them up to date as much as possible,” he said.
Ferry services have also almost completed a programme of rolling out a free wireless broadband signal at all inter island ferry terminals across Shetland, to allow islanders to receive and send emails while waiting for the ferry.
