News / Pool roof repairs not going so swimmingly after further delay

SWIMMERS will have to wait even longer to get back in the pool at the Brae leisure centre after an issue with the delivery of materials further delayed roof repairs.

The pool at the North Mainland leisure centre has been out of action since December when storms caused damage to the roof.

It was previously thought that the pool would be closed until September, but contractors DITT now believe it will be at least November before the pool is reopened.

The repairs are due to be carried out in October, with the pool then cleaned and refilled in early November.

However, these works will be at the mercy of Shetland’s elements, with any poor weather giving potential for disruption.

The repairs were previously delayed due to issues with the procurement process.

Shetland Recreational Trust manager James Johnston said: “We are sorry for the continued inconvenience and we are hopeful that it will not be much longer before we are welcoming swimmers back into the pool.”

The dry side of the North Mainland Leisure Centre building remains open as normal, allowing customers to continue to use the fitness suite, steam room and squash court and attend courses and classes.
