ALY BAIN and Phil Cunningham are among the headline acts due to perform at this year’s Fiddle Frenzy festival.
Shetland Arts has announced that the well-loved duo will perform at Lerwick’s Mareel on Thursday 4 August.
The week-long festival, which acts as a summer school for fiddle players, will open with a show at the same venue on Sunday 31 July called Da Farther Ben Da Welcomer.
The concert will act as a tribute to Shetland’s fiddle roots, with South Mainland Young Fiddlers and Shetland Fiddlers Society set to perform, while new curators Eunice Henderson and Claire White will lead an illustrated discussion.
The next event will be held at Sandwick’s Carnegie Hall on Tuesday 2 August as Clinkin’ Fiddles and Lewie Peterson take to the stage.
The Wednesday night will see the festival return to Mareel for a celebration of local dialect, with Christine de Luca giving a reading of her Shetland translation of Finnish story collection The Kalevala and local fiddler Catriona Macdonald performing.
An evening concert will then be held at Baltasound Hall, in Unst, on the Friday night before the festival closes with a gig at Mareel on the Saturday featuring Fiddle Frenzy students, Scandi Sessions and a collaboration between Shetland musicians.
Lynda Anderson of organiser Shetland Arts said: “The concerts during Fiddle Frenzy are an opportunity for students to experience the living culture of Shetland traditional music, and also for the local community and visitors not taking part in classes to experience the Frenzy festival week.
“All Mareel concerts are followed by a session at Mareel Cafe Bar, to which all musicians are welcome.”
