News / A plaque for Harry
A TRIBUTE to late Lerwick businessman Harry Jamieson has been installed outside his well-known town centre emporium.
On Friday the business development group Living Lerwick unveiled a wooden planter with a dedication on a plaque to remember the founder of Harry’s Department Store.
The planter is the fifth to be made by young people from the Bridges Project working with social enterprise COPE, while the plaque was donated by local firm N-Graved Shetland.
He was chairman of both Living Lerwick and Lerwick Port Authority when he died in June following a stroke aged 71.
His son Stewart said his father would have been proud of the planter and the plaque outside his multi-storey store.
The plaque reads:
“In fond memory of Harry Jamieson 1943 – 2015
A friendly, hard-working, community-spirited and successful businessman.
He had endless energy and spent it well.
From Lerwick Town Centre businesses through Living Lerwick”
Planters have also been placed along Harrison Square and outside The Shetland Times Bookshop.
Living Lerwick manager Christena Irvine said the planters all contained Christmas trees, but would be planted up “with different things at different times of the year”.
She said: “The practical skills learned by the young people (who made the planters) has helped improve their confidence and knowledge, which will increase their prospects of gaining employment in the future. So, the project has benefitted all concerned.”
