Community / Fundraising Sumburgh to Lerwick walk this weekend in ‘solidarity with folk in Gaza’
MORE THAN £1,900 has been raised so far ahead of a walk this weekend from Sumburgh to Lerwick in solidarity with the people of Gaza.
The event is being organised by Shetland South councillor and local paediatrician Alex Armitage.
A group will set off from the 30-mile walk from Sumburgh Lighthouse to Lerwick at around 6am on Saturday (23 March) to raise funds for the “relief of suffering in Gaza, and to support efforts in Israel to build peace, understanding and security for all”.
Money raised will be donated to Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund and to the Green Olive Collective in Israel.
“Shetland’s South Mainland is a similar size to the Gaza Strip; our journey is of a similar length to the treacherous route that hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have had to make, often on foot, from Gaza City to the “safe zone” of Rafah, which is now threatened by an Israeli government ground offensive,” Armitage said.
“We walk in solidarity with these people.”
He added that “more than 10,000 children have been killed since the beginning of these atrocities”.
The group are expected to arrive in Lerwick at around 9pm having stopped in Bigton for food. Armitage said people are welcome to join the walk for a section or its entirety.
