Letters / Look at the bigger picture
I have to agree with Craig Johnson’s letter (A significant exaggeration; SN 15/5/12)
The level of coverage that Sustainable Shetland has been given by the media is quite incredible given that it serves and the opinion of such a small percentage of the islands population.
It would be interesting to find out how many of Sustainable Shetland’s members live within a couple of miles of the proposed windfarm.
This must equate to a large proportion of its members, and Shetland’s sustainability will be the last thing on their mind; what they open there curtains in the morning to will be foremost.
Also, it would also be good to know how many of the 826 members are under the age of 40. That to me is most important, because any resistance to a project of this scale should represent the opinion of the youth, whom it will affect most in later years?
I’m neither for, nor against the windfarm. I think the cost to produce and transmission losses of anything produced by the windfarm is clearly a concern, but anyone worried about peat bogs, birds and the view are deluded.
The Kames is the ugliest part of Shetland anyway, and a few windmills might brighten the place up. Aberdeen is having the same debate about its city bypass.
I would urge everyone to look at the bigger picture. Not just the effect of their back garden!
