THE So Much To Sea roadshow that visited local halls to raise awareness of the isles’ £300 million seafood industry has been hailed a huge success by its organisers.
More than 1,200 people attended events in Bigton, Burra, Walls, Vidlin, Cullivoe and Symbister during February and March.
The events coincided with the local halls’ fish and chip nights and included a colourful seafood exhibition, a 14 minute film that captured the essence of the industry today, and some very popular seafood tastings.
Ruth Henderson, of trades body Seafood Shetland, said: “The aim of the events was to put the Shetland seafood industry in the spotlight and build awareness of its social and economic impact on the islands.
“We hoped that by taking the message out into the communities that we would achieve a wide coverage – but we have been absolutely delighted by the response.
“The support from local people has been evident in the attendance figures with many travelling from near and far to find out, learn more and support this important industry.”
She added that other So Much to Sea initiatives would continue into the summer.
The £74,000 project has been financed through European funding and contributions from the various sectors of the industry.
