A WORLD renowned scientist will give a public lecture in Lerwick’s town hall on Saturday evening to help raise funds to enable students to travel to the large particle collider CERN, in Geneva, Switzerland.
Dr Pauline Gagnon, whose most recent work has been in particle physics at CERN, will present a talk discussing the work carried in the hunt for the Higgs Boson particle.
The talk, lasting an hour, will be tailored to all levels ensures that everyone will enjoy the talk, whatever their physics experience.
The event, starting at 7pm is free of charge but donations would be most welcome to help fund a class trip by the Anderson High School’s advanced higher physics course to Geneva, next year.
Student Kate Chivers said: “During the trip, students will have the opportunity to tour the site at CERN and will also have a further opportunity to speak to Dr Gagnon.
“This public lecture is an excellent way to both increase the public’s knowledge of the work happening in CERN and help raise funds for our trip to Geneva.
“The trip will be really beneficial to our physics education. It will allow us to relate the theory we learn in school to the exciting, large scale physics of the world outside the classroom.
“It will also be invaluable in influencing our future choices for university courses, apprenticeships and thereafter, careers.”
Dr Gagnon is also visiting six different schools throughout Shetland during the course of her visit to share her knowledge with local students.
