News / Three drivers clocked at over 90mph
SHETLAND police are warning drivers to slow down after three local drivers were caught speeding at more than 90mph on main roads in the isles this week.
Area commander chief inspector Angus MacInnes said that on Wednesday three Shetland men were arrested after being clocked at 91, 93 and 94mph respectively.
He added that since 1 April this year there had been 110 fixed road traffic offences committed in the isles, including 16 drink drivers, and other speeding and failing to wear seat belts.
He said that three months ago one driver was caught driving at 115mph and someone else was clocked at 110mph, while it was not uncommon to catch people breaking the 20mph speed limit outside schools or 30mph limits in built up areas.
“There is a perception that speeding drivers are transient workers or tourists, but all three drivers caught yesterday were Shetland males,” MacInnes said.
He warned that he would soon be bringing up the road policing unit to Shetland for the sixth time this year to try and tackle law breaking on the roads in the isles.
“Drivers need to slow down because speed kills. We know that sometimes people go over the limit a little when the overtake, but driving at more than 90mph they are going to kill someone,” he said.
