NEWSPAPER deliveries to Shetland and Orkney will be disrupted for some time after Inverness based Highland Airways went into administration on Wednesday night.
Joint administrator Bruce Cartwright of PricewaterhouseCoopers said that they had been unable to continue trading and subsequently all flights had been cancelled and the company’s nine aircraft grounded.
Earlier this year it became clear the company was facing financial difficulties when they stopped taking bookings for a time, while searching for an investor.
Mr Cartwright said: “It is inevitable that there will be a substantial number of redundancies but we will endeavour where feasible to assist the work force in securing employment with the new service providers.”
A spokeswoman for Highland and Islands Enterprise expressed her hope that other airlines would take over Highland Airways’ routes.
Marjorie joins board
MAJORIE Williamson, the owner of the Herrislea House Hotel, in Tingwall, has been appointed to the board of NHS Shetland.
Making the appointment, health secretary Nicola Sturgeon said Mrs Williamson brought skills taken from her business and local authority experience to the health board, and also has knowledge of service delivery.
This appointment will be for four years and will run from 1 April to March 31, 2014. The post is part-time and attracts a remuneration of £7,332 for a time commitment of 52 days per year.
Gun gig changed to Norscot
THE CONCERT by rock band Gun scheduled for Burra Hall this Saturday (27 March) has been changed to Norscot Angling Club due to “circumstances beyond our control”, the organisers said yesterday (Thursday).
The gig will now start at 9pm at Norscot and is only open to over 18s. Original tickets are still valid and anyone seeking a refund can do so at point of purchase.
Because the capacity of the Norscot is significantly less than Burra, tickets are now very limited, and promoters say that anyone who wishes to attend the show should buy a ticket from Shetland Box Office at Islesburgh Community Centre as soon as possible to guarantee entry.
Promoters, A Northern Soul, apologised for any inconvenience the change of venue may cause.
