News / Power restored
SCOTTISH Hydro Electric have reported that by 5pm on Friday all but two of the 1,500 Shetland customers hit by power cuts over the previous 24 hours had their electricity supply restored.
Outages began on Thursday evening and were widespread across the isles, affecting people from Sumburgh to Unst, Sand to Eshaness, where power returned on Friday afternoon.
One house on Yell and the lighthouse at Eshaness remain without a supply. Engineers reported the waves were crashing over the clifftop lighthouse, making it impossible to carry out repairs.
In total there were 11 faults, seven on high voltage lines and four on low voltage lines.
The electricity company apologised for any inconvenience, but commented that the isles’ network had stood up well to the weather compared with the Scottish mainland.
