News / Relay for Life songwriting competition reaches finale
ORIGINAL music written by a local songwriter will be performed during the candle of hope ceremony at this year’s Cancer Research Relay For Life event in May.
Seven songs have been entered into a competition organised by the local singer/songwriter group and on Sunday (1 April) the winner – or winners – will be picked.
An event is taking place from 7pm at Fjara in Lerwick where the songs will be performed and a winner selected by the Relay for Life committee.
The criteria for the competition was that the songs should be of an “upbeat nature, reflecting positive aspects surrounding the ongoing fight against cancer and the increasing survival rates resulting from that”.
The candle of hope ceremony is a way for locals to remember those who have lost their lives to cancer, or celebrate those who have survived the disease.
This year’s Relay for Life fundraiser takes place at the Clickmin in Lerwick on 26 May.
Committee chairman Martin Henderson commented: “We thought this would be a novel way of sending out a positive message – plus be a bit of fun too – although no doubt this provided the singer/songwriter group with a challenge, writing positive, upbeat songs from what is all too often a very dark subject.
“We now look forward to hearing the songs themselves and to having the winner or winners perform their songs during the candle of hope ceremony at the relay itself.”
