News / Riddoch book events
AUTHOR, journalist and broadcaster Lesley Riddoch will return to Shetland next week to promote her new book McSmorgasbord with three events across the isles.
She will appear alongside Northern Isles SNP election candidate Miriam Brett to open up discussion and debate on issues including opportunities for Shetland and the UK leaving the European Union.
Riddoch’s McSmorgasbord, which was co-written with the late Paddy Bort, explores what “post-Brexit Scotland can learn from the Nordics”
She said: “The Nordic countries have a veritable smorgasbord of relationships with the European Union, from in to out and many places in-between. So, what does that mean for Scotland?
“Somewhere in this incredible diversity of relationships with Europe is an arrangement that’s likely to be good for Scotland too – maybe more than one. Inside or outside the UK, Scotland wants to keep trade and cultural links with Europe. But is the EU really the best club for an independent Scotland?”
The first event, which is supported by the local branch of Women for Independence, will take place at Mareel on Monday (29 May) from 12.45pm.
On Monday evening Riddoch and Brett will visit the Mid Yell Hall, while on Tuesday evening they will host a talk at the NAFC Marine Centre in Scalloway.
Brett added: “This book is timely, especially as we didn’t know we were going to be fighting a general election, but it particularly gives us so much to think about by way of compromise too. Something that Nicola Sturgeon tried to invite Theresa May to consider without success.”
