News / Cold while waiting for a taxi
A MAN from Middlesborough who damaged a van while it was parked outside a Brae hotel last year has been fined.
Jeffrey O’Connell, of 130 Saltersgill Avenue, appeared from custody at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Friday after previously admitting maliciously damaging the vehicle on 1 November.
The court heard in April that O’Connell and co-accused Robert Thomas, 33, of 1 Monterey Street, Mansleton, broke into a van to get warm when waiting in the cold for a taxi.
Defence agent Tommy Allan said his client had “too much to drink” and had been “stupid”.
The 33 year old steel erector previously missed two sentencing hearings on the matter for a variety of reasons, including a funeral, and was taken into custody on Wednesday.
His co-accused had previously been fined £450, but Sheriff Philip Mann fined O’Connell £490 for inconveniencing the court.
