News / Post-beanfeast assault
A YOUNG man who attacked another reveller at a Beanfeast after-party with a glass bottle to the point of injury has avoided jail.
The 17 year old previously admitted the assault, which took place at the Ness Boating Club in Dunrossness on 19 December after the Anderson High School end-of-year bash.
After an argument, the man, who was a former pupil of the school, picked up a bottle and smashed it over the head of another man before striking him again.
The victim received a “serious” laceration and a small permanent scar as a result.
Defence agent Tommy Allan told Lerwick Sheriff Court on Wednesday that his client, who legally cannot be named as he is under 18, is a “young man who made a mistake” and regrets his “moment of madness”.
Sheriff Philip Mann said a custodial sentence was “undoubtedly an option”, but as the man was a first offender and had a positive social work report, he decided against jail.
The sheriff gave him 180 hours of unpaid work, a compensation order of £500 and placed him under supervision for nine months.
