News / Radio raises cash
BBC RADIO Shetland raised around £20,000 during its latest marathon Children In Need broadcast – and more money is still set to come in.
The local station generated the cash on their annual fundraising night on Friday as staff worked through the evening at its Pitt Lane studio in Lerwick.
Senior producer John Johnston said “lots more money” will be added to the total from fundraising events in schools that were closed on Friday due to the weather.
The station’s auction proved popular yet again, with a three night stay in a Shetland lighthouse going for £600.
A return trip on the NorthLink ferry went for £475, while BP flights and accommodation raised £350.
Other items sold on the night included parking on Lerwick’s Victoria Pier for one year, the use of classic wedding cars for a day and Christmas lunch at the Scalloway Hotel.
The seven-hour broadcast also saw Shetland actor Douglas Henshall drop by, while a host of local music acts – from The Revellers to Sheila Henderson – performed live.
Last year Radio Shetland made £21,500 for Children In Need during their fundraising evening.
