News / Algae warning
SHETLAND Islands Council is advising people to stay clear of Spiggie Loch after blue-green algae was found in its water.
The council said the algae was having no adverse affects on the local water supplies.
Signs will be placed next to the south mainland loch to tell the public not to come in contact with the scum.
Blue green algae can provoke medical reactions such as rashes, vomiting, diarrhoea and fever. It is also known to kill dogs and livestock.
Those who own adjoining land and people with fishing interests are being told of the development.
