News / Scalloway extends pool opening hours
THE SCALLOWAY swimming pool has extended its opening hours with Lerwick’s Clickimin pool closed off for the foreseeable future.
A small part of a bolt thought to be from the glazed area of the Clickimin Leisure Complex pool fell into the water on 16 July, leading to its immediate closure over safety concerns.
Shetland Recreational Trust have now extended the opening hours of the Scalloway swimming pool in response to the “prolonged” closure, which will continue for at least a number of weeks.
Swimmers will now be able to access the Scalloway pool from 7am to 8pm on weekdays, 10am to 7pm on Saturdays and 11am to 7pm on Sundays until further notice.
SRT added that a structural engineers’ report into the Lerwick building should be received by the middle of August. Any work required on the Clickimin pool roof will then be carried out.
Recreational trust general manager James Johnston apologised for the inconvenience that the Lerwick closure may be causing.
“However, the safety of customers and staff is paramount, so we must resolve the issue with the roof at Clickimin pool before we are able to open again,” he said.
The pool has been drained to allow scaffolding to be erected for engineers to undertake a survey.
SRT technical services manager David Wagstaff added: “We are pleased to have been able to move quickly to appoint consultants and contractors to carry out the work needed to undertake a detailed structural survey.
“The preparatory work has started this week and will continue for the next two weeks. We anticipate that the structural engineers’ report will be with us by the middle of August.
“The extent of any works then required to resolve the problem will become clearer at that time.”
Clickimin’s main pool, toddlers’ pool, flumes, river, health suite, soft play area and café are all currently closed to the public. The closure comes in the middle of the school holidays.
Trust staff are working on providing alternative activities in the main hall of the leisure complex.
SRT is also set to contact those who have bookings at the pool in the coming weeks to offer refunds or make other arrangements.
