News / Flaws goal secures silverware for footballers
SHETLAND’S footballers are enjoying some silverware after triumphing in the final of the Jock Memorial Cup – seeing off Thurso 1-0 after extra time thanks to a goal from captain Leighton Flaws.
The boys in blue made the trip to Caithness, the game having been shifted from Orkney, for the match on Saturday afternoon.
Shetland were the dominant side during normal time but were unlucky not to find a breakthrough in 90 minutes. Conditions were described as tricky on a windy day, with Sir George’s Park – also known as the ‘Dammies’ – proving a bumpy surface.
In the first half chances fell to James Johnston and David Murray, while Connor Regan hit the post from a narrow angle.
Having enjoyed the majority of possession, Shetland finally got the goal deserved in the first half of extra time through Flaws.
A spectacular volley in the second half of extra time from Johnston came back off the crossbar, but the solitary goal proved to be enough to secure victory in what will surely serve as a confident boost to manager Niall Bristow’s men ahead of their trip to Jersey for this summer’s Nat West Island Games.
