News / Clickimin footpaths closed
TWO footpaths by Lerwick’s Clickimin Loch have been closed prior to work starting on a £500,000 upgrade.
The footpaths on the west side of the loch and around Clickimin rugby pitch are being widened to three metres, covered in tarmac and lit up by streets lights.
Shetland Islands Council say the upgrade is to encourage pupils at the planned Anderson High School to walk or cycle to class.
Building contractors are now on site and have started work on the improvements, which are expected to take around three months.
Local firm Tulloch Developments are doing the work between Westerloch and Clickimin, while the SIC’s workforce are upgrading the footpath around the rugby pitch.
Meanwhile cyclists and walkers are being asked to use alternative routes.
The work has been made possible by a £507,500 grant from the transport organisation SusTrans Scotland.
The footpath on the east side of Clickimin Loch remains open for now, but is earmarked for similar improvements later in the year.
The route over Staney Hill between Clickimin and Ladies Drive will remain open to pedestrians.
