Dear Shetland News supporter,

We have reasons to be cheerful this week as we have reached a major milestone. It’s 20 years since Shetland News (in its current form) launched.
|
Back in 2003 the digital world was still in its infancy. Websites were very basic and often slow, there was no social media and, incredibly, we all lived without smartphones and had no idea what we were missing.
|
No-one really knew where the journey would take us when Pete Bevington and Hans J Marter decided to take on the mothballed Shetland News website (originally created by Graham Storey and Jonathan Wills in 1995) and started turning it into a business.
|
Not surprisingly, there were many obstacles and often painful changes along the way, but 20 years later we are still here and have meanwhile developed www.shetnews.co.uk into a fully-fledged and widely-read website that is a trusted source of local news.
|
With four employees on its books, all working remotely from their home offices, and supported by a large pool of freelance writers and voluntary contributors, Shetland News today reaches between 40,000 and 50,000 unique users per week and attracts over one million page views per month.
|
And thanks to you, dear supporter, we have over recent years successfully implemented a mechanism that helps us financially, while at the same time guarantees that the website will continue to be freely available for those who can’t or won’t support us.
|
That way Shetland News has become a truly collaborative community resource.
|
So, when the team will be celebrating our 20th birthday this weekend, we will be raising a glass to all of you; your support means a lot to us. Many thanks!
