Community / Christmas tree up ahead of switch-on event
LERWICK’s Commercial Street has become that little bit more festive after the Market Cross Christmas tree was erected at the weekend.
The annual Christmas parade and lights switch-on will take place on 1 December.
The tree – paid for by Shetland Islands Council – has again come from Norway, and it was transported from Aberdeen by NorthLink and Northwards.
It was put up at the Cross by the council’s roads service team, with the project managed and arranged by Living Lerwick.
Decorating the tree with lights will also be the responsibility of the town centre organisation.
Overhead Christmas lights will be put up on the street this week, with pedestrians and drivers warned that there may be some disruption on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Living Lerwick director Edna Irvine said: “It’s fantastic that NorthLink, Northwards and the council come together with us to make this happen.
“The tree at the Cross is a focal point in the town and it’s always exciting to see it go up.”
