Arts / Kate Bush memorabilia among items up for grabs as Hillswick gallery opens doors
RARE music memorabilia from artists like Kate Bush will be on sale at a fundraising event in Hillswick this weekend.
Two art exhibitions will also be on show as the Weaving Shed Gallery opens its doors.
The gallery is owned by Geoff Jukes, who works in music management, and an array of “highly desirable and extremely rare records, rock ephemera, furniture, clothes, classic hifi equipment and artwork” will be on sale.
Also up for grabs will be rare and fairly unique items from Kate Bush, Bob Geldof and Underworld – three acts Jukes has managed – including t-shirts and other memorabilia.
Money raised will go towards the gallery’s running costs and also environmental projects at the three Northmavine schools.
Original artwork from the acclaimed Climate Change Children’s Voices Book – featuring some of Northmavine’s young artists – will be on display. More information can be found on the project’s website here.
The book was shared with an international audience at the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow last year.
Jukes said the book has gone into schools to help them develop environment projects.
“The idea now is to take it further, to create a resource for schools,” he said.
“The information coming through to children is just so traumatic in some ways – it’s just so overwhelming. So it’s letting them know that they do have a voice, and also there are things they can do, however how small.”
The Weaving Shed’s permanent exhibition of work from the late Jeannette-Thérèse Obstoj will also be available to view.
A visionary writer, lyricist, poet, artist, and music video director, Obstoj is said to have loved Shetland and frequently spent summers in the isles.
Books and cards from both exhibitions will be available to buy.
The formerly derelict Weaving Shed was restored by Jukes in tribute to Obstoj, and it opened its doors in 2017.
He is keen for the facility to be seen as a resource for the community, highlighting that Esme Wilcock is set to host an exhibition between the weekend of 17June and the end of July.
In conjunction with the Northmavine Community Development Company space in the building is kept busy with artists in residence, while people can also hire it.
“We’re trying to give a home for creative people,” Jukes said.
“We ask them [artists in residence] to try to do some worth within the community, so sometimes they’ve participated in projects with the local schools as well.
“We try to have them bring something into the community, not just come here as an artistic retreat.”
Meanwhile among the vinyl and memorabilia for sale at the weekend will be many items from Jukes’ own collection, as well as some of his classic, high-end Hi-Fi equipment.
There will be some pre-owned furniture including beds, multi-drawer units and filing cabinets, “a few beautiful paintings, an eclectic selection of ornaments, and some high quality classic clothes”.
The open days are Saturday 4 June and Sunday 5 June, from 1pm-5pm.
For those wanting to make a day of it in Hillswick, there will also be a plant sale and teas at the hall on Sunday between 2pm and 5pm.
