Court / Man admits threatening behaviour

A MAN who admitted behaving in a threatening or abusive manner towards his pregnant partner has had his sentenced deferred for social work reports.

Police were called to Norman Donald’s house in Leaside, Mossbank, on Monday (22 July) evening after concerned neighbours phoned the police.

The 41-year-old appeared from custody at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Tuesday to admit repeatedly shouting and swearing at the woman, acting in an aggressive manner, throwing items of furniture about and placing his partner in a state of fear or alarm.

Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said neighbours heard Donald shouting “derogatory comments” at around 5pm. Police were called but sent on their way again after the couple said nothing had happened.

They later returned to the property after speaking to neighbours, and they found Donald with a laceration on his arm, with blood on the floor.

The police left again at the couple’s request, but officers returned when they heard more shouting and arrested Donald.

Defence agent Tommy Allan said Donald, who had been drinking before the incident occurred, wanted to apologise to the court and also to his neighbours.

Sheriff Ian Cruickshank said it was a “concerning incident” which was compounded by the fact that police had to re-enter the property.

He decided to defer the case until 14 August to allow a criminal justice social work report to be prepared.

The sheriff bailed Donald on a condition that he does not enter his old home address, or approach or contact the complainer.

“At the end of the day, my paramount concern is the future safety of your partner,” Sheriff Cruickshank said.
