Worldwide knit-along for Harriet’s hat
A WORLDWIDE knit-along of a Fair Isle hat created to raise money for the MRI scanner appeal is set to take place at the weekend after the pattern gained interest in the States.
The knit-along of ‘Harriet’s Hat’ on Saturday (8 June) is being organised by the Minnesota Knitters Guild.
Local knitter Harriet Middleton made the pattern to raise money for the ongoing MRI Scanner Appeal.
The Minnesota Knitters Guild, which has 700 people in its ranks, said the piece was a “beautiful hat”, and it encouraged people to join in on Saturday by knitting along.
The pattern can be downloaded online or bought in local shops.
As Saturday is also Worldwide Knit in Public Day, Harriet will be casting on upstairs in Mareel in Lerwick.
The knitter will be taking along hard copies of the pattern, and the public is invited to join her from 11am.
Harriet formed the MRI Maakers group earlier this year to do her bit to raise cash for a £2 million MRI scanner for Shetland.
Starting off by selling knitted items at stalls, she then started the group to encourage people to come together and knit every fortnight to then sell on the pieces.
Since MRI Maakers started the group has raised well over £10,000 by selling knitwear as well as the hat patterns.
Harriet, who started knitting when she was five years old, has had to travel to Aberdeen for MRI scans for the last few years to check that she is cancer-free following a previous diagnosis.
