A SHETLAND company that specialises in dried fish has won a prestigious accolade from Great Taste – the "world's most coveted food awards".
Thule Ventus was awarded a one-star Great Taste award by judges for its 250g box of Shetland air-dried salt cod.
It was one of over 12,600 products to be judged, of which 3,254 were awarded a one-star accolade. A further 1,207 received a two-star prize and 192 have been awarded the top three-star rating.
In their summation the judges said the Shetland air-dried salt cod was a "classic looking piece of re-hydrated salt fish, dense in texture though with a nice and meaty texture".
Judged by over 500 food critics, chefs, cooks, restaurateurs and producers, as well as a whole host of food writers and journalists, Great Taste is widely acknowledged as the most respected food accreditation scheme for artisan and speciality food producers.
Thule Ventus owner David Polson said: "This is our first year submitting our products for the award. For us, it is a great boost to know that our product is up there with the best. We've salted fish for generations, but to know that it has wider appeal is fantastic.
"We pride ourselves on quality and craftmanship, so this award is great recognition of what we do, and how we do it."
Shetland Sea Salt was also given a one-star rating in 2017, while in recent years Lerwick Brewery, Shetlandeli and The Shetland Distillery Company have also picked up Great Taste accolades.
