Two injured in Voe crash

The Shetland Transport articulated lorry and the van came off the road at Dale Lees on the A968 on Wednesday morning. The Shetland Transport articulated lorry and the van came off the road at Dale Lees on the A968 on Wednesday morning. THE DRIVERS of an articulated lorry and a white van were both slightly injured when their vehicles collided in wintry conditions on the A968 north of Voe on Wednesday morning.

Police and the ambulance service were called to the road traffic collision at Dale Lees at around 9am.

The road between Voe and the Toft ferry terminal is currently open but will be closed on Thursday between 9am and 1pm to allow for the recovery of the vehicles.

Traffic for the Yell Sound ferry and Firth/Mossbank is asked to divert via Brae.

Meanwhile enquiries continue into what caused Tuesday's accident in Lerwick, which left a 59-year old man in a serious but stable condition in hospital. He has been flown to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary for further treatment.

Police have renewed their advice to road users to slow down and take extra care in the wintry conditions.

A spokesman said: "Police have attended a number of incidents on the roads across the Highlands and Islands and we are urging road users to take the weather conditions into account while planning a journey.

"When the road is wet, covered in snow or icy, it can make a considerable difference to grip and in particular stopping distances, which will be greatly increased.

"When the roads are icy, drive at a slow speed in as high a gear as possible; accelerate and brake very gently.

"Check the forecast before you travel and ensure your vehicle is in good condition and ready for the roads. Be aware that it can be more difficult to see other road users such as pedestrians and cyclists."
