Great medal haul in Inverness for young athletes

The Shetland team enjoyed a very fruitful visit to Inverness at the weekend. The Shetland team enjoyed a very fruitful visit to Inverness at the weekend. A THIRTY eight-strong team of Shetland athletes travelled to Inverness for an athletics competition at the weekend and returned with a record haul of 52 medals.

The youngsters were taking part in the Scottish North District Track and Field Championships on Friday (12 May) and Saturday (13 May) and between them won 18 gold, 17 silver and 17 bronze medals.

The team achieved a huge number of personal bests, but the two stand-out achievements were by Seumas Mackay, who set a new Shetland senior record and championship best performance in winning gold in the under-17 men’s 800 metres with a time of one minute, 57.27 seconds; and Katie Dinwoodie, who won three gold medals. 

Her successes came in the 100 metres, 200 metres and 300 metres which she won with times of 12.82 seconds, 25.98 seconds and 42.68 seconds respectively.
