Photo Ian Leask A SMALL shipping company based in the island of Whalsay has just taken delivery of its second cargo boat, the 27 metre fish feed carrier Havilah.

Built for LCL Shipping at the Parkol shipyard in Whitby, the Havilah will join the Havgull in delivering feed to Shetland’s many salmon farms later this week.

Michael Pearson, one of the shareholders in the company, said the new vessel would give them the flexibility they needed to operate on the west and the east side of the isles.

One of the cargo vessels will be based in Scalloway with the other in Lerwick, he said.

The feed company BioMar has a share in the company and has also financed building the new vessel.

However the company also delivers salmon feed for rival firms Skretting and Ewos.

“We decided to get a second vessel to keep the output going and make it more flexible. The boys in Scalloway can take advantage of the weather and go up the west side today,” he said on Tuesday.

At 27 metres' overall length, 23.95m registered, the vessel is able to carry 190 tonnes of salmon feed bags.
