Bearded seal makes appearance in Lerwick

| Written by Hans J Marter

A LOCAL wildlife charity is warning people to keep their distance from an Arctic bearded seal which appeared at Lerwick's Victoria Pier this morning (Friday).

The animal, which does not seem to be afraid of people, has been seen on and off the slip since 6am.

Jan Bevington of Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary said people taking photos of the seal should be careful as these large animals could lurch out and are more agile than expected.

The sanctuary's team is expected to arrive in Lerwick to assess the situation, while the police and the SSPCA have also been informed.
