With the Shetland South ward already decided (all three candidates - Allison Duncan, Robbie McGregor and George Smith - will be councillors), it is expected the other six wards will be declared by around lunchtime.

Candidates supportive of resettling refugees

THERE is an overwhelming consensus in favour of Shetland taking in refugee families among prospective SIC councillors amid an ongoing humanitarian crisis in war-torn Syria and the wider Middle East region.

Shetland Islands Council signed up to a resettlement scheme for vulnerable people in Syria in September 2015 and has been seeking to identify suitable individuals.

Candidates on more autonomy for the isles

What constitutional future for Shetland?IN RECENT years Shetland's own constitutional position in an ever-shifting national context has come into sharp focus.

With another general election round the corner, Brexit negotiation about to begin and a second Scottish independence referendum looming over the horizon many argue that the time is right for more self-determination.

Candidates' views on private seminars

Lerwick Town Hall.THERE was a mixed response from candidates for Thursday’s local government elections on whether private council seminars should be held in public.

Retiring councillor Jonathan Wills’ bid to open up members’ seminars to the public was emphatically outvoted 17-2 when he raised the issue at the last full SIC meeting before the elections.

Candidates give views on school closures

A combination of strong opposition from the affected communities and a lengthy Scottish Government-imposed moratorium on school closures resulted in the last council abandoning plans to reduce the number of schools in Shetland midway through the term.

Candidates oppose SCT's new governance

THERE IS an overwhelming consensus among candidates for the upcoming SIC elections that Shetland Charitable Trust (SCT) has made a mistake with its recent governance reform.

Tories put forward paper candidates

THE CHAIRMAN of the local Conservative branch has denied that a Tory candidate in the Shetland Islands Council election who doesn't want people to vote for him was put forward for selection without his full knowledge.

Voting reminder

SHETLANDERS are being reminded to make sure they are registered to vote for the upcoming local council elections.

Names of 32 SIC election candidates unveiled

THIRTY two candidates have put themselves forward for the 22 seats on Shetland Islands Council for this May’s election – with all three standing in the South Mainland ward guaranteed victory as there are no other candidates.
